Project 2: Space-Time

Driving Question: Will we ever run out of music?

Design Brief:

Your composition for Space-Time is a visual or audio composition outlining changes in music over time using a continuum (past, present, future). You can talk about changes in technology, changes in music, changes in society, changes in social justice, etc.

The student product below reflects an inquiry and object based learning activity. Students were given three objects to research. They were told that the three objects were intricately related and that there was a tie that binds the objects.

The objects:
A cylinder from the Columbia Phonograph Company (1902) for artist Billy Murray: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im-4H6FGy-Y

A blackface minstrel doll from the late 1800’s.

This is America: Childish Gambino: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYOjWnS4cMY&list=PLuZqx7YitjbXphbU6iW6VcONgcKVIFkWZ&index=5&t=0s

The student product is a juxtaposition of Billy Murray; his whitewashed internet presence and his racists beginnings as a blackface minstrel. The product was generated using KnightLab.
